North London: Arriva bus driver strikes from 14 August to 20 October 2026
SuspendedLast Updated:
Unite members driving for Arriva North London are taking strike action across north London and parts of Essex in a dispute over working conditions in hot weather and the treatment of union representatives. More than 1,500 drivers at eight garages are involved: Barking, Edmonton, Enfield, Grays, Palmers Green, Stamford Hill, Tottenham and Wood Green.
Current status (18 August 2026)
Drivers walked out on 14 August and 18 August. Following talks, the walkouts scheduled from 19 to 21 August have been suspended so members can vote on a new offer on conditions. If members reject it, strike action resumes on Tuesday 25 August.
Remaining strike dates
25–28 August, 4–5 September, 7–8 September, 18–19 September, 21–22 September, 2–3 October, 5–6 October, 16–17 October and 19–20 October — 26 days in total as originally called. Some of these dates coincide with Piccadilly line closures in August and September.
The dispute
Most Arriva North London buses have air cooling rather than full air conditioning, which the union says has cut cab temperatures by only two or three degrees during this summer's heatwaves, with cabs reaching 40°C and above. Drivers have reported heat exhaustion, heat stroke and dehydration, and Unite warns that heat worsens driver fatigue, putting drivers and the public at risk. The union also alleges bullying of its representatives and members by management.
What passengers should expect
Significant delays and cancellations across affected routes on strike days. Check your route with Transport for London or the operator before travelling, and allow extra time.
