Italy: grassroots unions' general strike on Friday 4 December 2026 (rail from 21:00 on 3 December)

A coalition of grassroots unions — CUB, SGB, SI-Cobas, CIB-Unicobas, ADL Varese, SBM and SGC — has filed a nationwide general strike of all public and private sectors for Friday 4 December 2026, registered with the transport ministry on 27 September.

Transport hours in the notice: the railway sector stops from 21:00 on Thursday 3 December to 21:00 on Friday 4 December, and motorway staff from 22:00 to 22:00. Local public transport is not yet itemised in the registry line; in previous general strikes by the same unions, city buses, metros and trams were included with the usual guaranteed bands, so expect the ministry entry to be completed closer to the date.

What to expect: on strike days called by these unions, Trenitalia and the regional operators run the guaranteed trains listed for the 06:00–09:00 and 18:00–21:00 bands and cancel a share of the rest; long-distance services are partly affected. The unions' demands (wages, against rearmament spending and for public services) are political rather than company-specific, so participation varies widely by region.
