Italy: nationwide ENAV air traffic control strike on 30 September 2026 (13:00–17:00)

Last Updated:

Major air transport (air navigation services)

Uiltrasporti has called a four-hour national strike at ENAV, Italy's air navigation service provider, on Wednesday 30 September 2026 from 13:00 to 17:00. Because ENAV provides air traffic control across the country, the action can affect flights at every Italian airport, not just one hub.

One action, several proclamations

The stoppage was filed as separate notices — for ENAV itself, for its subsidiary Techno Sky, which maintains the hardware and software behind Italy's flight assistance systems, and for individual ENAV units in Bari, Bologna, Milan Linate and at the Rome headquarters. All of them cover the same four-hour window and were called by the same union: this is one coordinated stoppage, not a series of separate strikes.

Italian media have flagged 30 September as the month's most difficult day for air travel.

What travellers should expect

Expect delays and some cancellations on flights departing from, arriving at or overflying Italy during the afternoon window, with knock-on effects either side of it. Italian law protects a minimum level of service: ENAC publishes a list of guaranteed flights before each strike, and airlines contact affected passengers directly.

If you are flying that afternoon, check your flight status with the airline before leaving for the airport, and allow extra time for connections.

A further national ENAV strike, called by FILT-CGIL and UGL T.A., is scheduled for Friday 6 November 2026 in the same 13:00–17:00 window.

✎ Update
The four-hour ENAV strike of 30 September has ended. ITA Airways cancelled about 29 per cent of its flights for the day, mostly at Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate; other airlines reported delays and some cancellations in the afternoon. Flights are operating normally again. The next national ENAV strike is scheduled for Saturday 21 November.

✎ Update
Strike day: ITA Airways has cancelled about 29 per cent of its flights for 30 September, mostly to and from Rome Fiumicino and Milan Linate, and lets affected passengers rebook or refund free of charge until 7 October. Other airlines are cancelling or retiming flights in the 13:00–17:00 window on a smaller scale. UILT says it is striking over the unrenewed company agreement, lost purchasing power, staff shortages and shift organisation at ENAV.

✎ Update
The strike goes ahead tomorrow, 30 September, from 13:00 to 17:00. Airports are telling passengers that scheduled flights in that window may be delayed or cancelled and to check with their airline; ITA Airways and the low-cost carriers normally publish their cancellation lists on the evening before. The separate handling strike at Pisa and Florence appears to have been withdrawn, so the effect at those airports comes from the ENAV stoppage alone.

✎ Update
Two days before the strike, all the ENAV and Techno Sky notices for 30 September remain on the transport ministry's register. ENAC has not yet published its list of guaranteed flights and no airline has announced cancellations; ITA Airways and the other carriers usually publish their lists on the day before, so passengers with flights between 13:00 and 17:00 should check their airline's app on Tuesday evening.

✎ Update
The strike remains on the transport ministry's register as of 21 September, with the national ENAV and Techno Sky stoppages joined by local actions at Bologna, Bari, Milan Linate and Naples. ENAC has not yet published the list of guaranteed flights for 30 September; it normally appears a few days before the strike. Because the 13:00–17:00 stoppage falls entirely outside the protected 07:00–10:00 and 18:00–21:00 bands, flights scheduled in that window are the ones at risk.
