Italy: nationwide multi-sector general strike on Saturday 26 September 2026
In 39 daysLast Updated:
CSLE, with the participation of FISI, has called a nationwide multi-sector general strike in Italy on Saturday 26 September 2026, covering workers in both the public and private sectors.
Transport
- Rail, air and maritime services: the strike is proclaimed for up to 24 hours. The proclamation does not specify the hours for these sectors.
- Local public transport: also included. The proclamation covers local public transport as a category rather than naming individual operators, so the effect will vary from city to city.
Beyond transport
The action also extends to schools, healthcare, fuel stations and public administration.
Guaranteed services
Italian law protects a minimum level of service during strikes. For regional trains, the usual protected bands on a Saturday are 06:00–09:00 and 18:00–21:00. A train already running when the strike begins continues to its final stop if that can be reached within an hour. Trenitalia, Italo and the regional operators publish lists of guaranteed trains shortly before each strike, and local transport companies publish their own protected hours.
What travellers should expect
Expect cancellations and reduced services on 26 September, especially outside the guaranteed bands. Because the hours for rail, air and maritime services have not been announced, check your specific train, flight or ferry with the operator in the days before you travel. Participation in strikes called by smaller unions varies, so actual disruption may be lighter than the proclamation suggests.
This alert was originally created on 18 July 2026.
