Spain: refinery workers call strike on 27 May 2026 over early-retirement demands

On 6 May 2026 the Sindicato de Trabajadores de las Refinerías (STR) formally called the nationwide refining strike for 27 May, after assemblies of affiliates voted 96.7% in favour. The call covers all ten active refining complexes in Spain — A Coruña, Cartagena, Muskiz (Bilbao), Puertollano and Tarragona (Repsol); Castellón (BP); Santa Cruz de Tenerife, La Rábida (Huelva) and San Roque (Cádiz) (Moeve); and Asesa in Tarragona — affecting more than 20,000 workers. STR placed responsibility for any fuel-supply disruption on AICE (Asociación de la Industria del Combustible de España) and its member companies, warning it could not guarantee supplies of gasoline, diesel and kerosene. The action lands in a tight supply context, with Spanish outlets noting the ongoing Strait of Hormuz disruption (in effect since early March) is already pressuring domestic fuel prices. No public response from AICE, Repsol, BP, Moeve or the Ministry of Labour has been reported as of today.
