Netherlands: nationwide 24-hour public transport and rail strike on 9 September 2026

FNV has called a nationwide 24-hour strike across public transport and the rail sector in the Netherlands on Wednesday 9 September 2026. Trains, buses, trams and metros are expected to stop across large parts of the country.

Who is striking

• NS (national rail), ProRail and DB Cargo
• Regional transport (streekvervoer) and city transport (stadsvervoer) operators

Why

Workers are protesting against the government's planned €6.8 billion in social security cuts, including shortening unemployment benefits (WW), scaling back disability insurance (WIA), and raising the state pension age (AOW) more quickly.

Timing

Regional transport stops from the start of service. NS and city transport operators will confirm exact start and end times in September.

What travellers should expect

Expect very limited or no train, bus, tram and metro services for the whole day. Check with your operator before travelling and plan alternative transport where possible. The action is not limited to transport — strikes are also planned in ports, waste management, the metal industry and the cleaning sector.
